Gala 54 RHC Cougars 2nd XV 7

The Cougars travelled to Gala on a glorious sunny day to replay the match from 12 March, which was postponed due to snow – what a difference a month makes!

This is a shorter match report than usual as the coach left his notepad in the changing rooms and no-one else on the touchline had a pen and paper.

The score might suggest the Cougars played badly, but they were up against the best side they had played this season. This Gala side was considerably better than the Gala side the Cougars played in Edinburgh at the start of the season.

Gala had pace all over the park, power up front, great handling skills and when they decided not to run the ball their kicking was out of the top drawer and always asked questions of the Cougars’ defence.

The Cougars did have chances but every time they threatened an error cost them possession or Gala managed to slow possession and play down – not always legally it has to be said.

Most of the match was spent defending. Jan covered well making plenty of tackles. Both Bastiens put in some big hits, Chris made some powerful driving runs as did Richard Ward, although he was in the centre of a mass of maroon players every time he got the ball.

Gala scored four tries in each half and only missed with one conversion. The Cougars were 33 – 0 down with about a quarter of the match to play when they finally scored. Mark got the ball just out side the Gala 22 and managed to weave his way through the advancing Gala defence, with a dummy and a step and sprinted to score under the posts. He added the conversion as well.

Any hope of a possible comeback was short lived. Gala managing a further three scores in the final twenty minutes

There was a lot of tired and bruised Cougars players at the final whistle, but the players did not through the towel in at any point. Hard to believe but the Cougars have played worse than they did against Gala and won!
